True hourly wage calculator
Turn salary into a more realistic hourly value by including the time and direct costs your job actually requires.
What is a true hourly wage?
A stated hourly wage or salary tells you what your employer pays for contracted work. A true hourly wage asks a different question: how much value do you actually keep for every hour the job takes from your life?
That means counting time and costs that ordinary salary calculators often ignore: unpaid overtime, commuting and recurring personal work expenses.
What the calculator includes
- Annual or hourly income
- Estimated employment taxes for supported countries when you enter before-tax pay
- Paid hours and unpaid overtime
- Paid leave
- Commute time and commute costs
- Recurring personal work costs
Why this can change a job decision
A higher salary can still produce a lower effective hourly value if the job requires much longer hours, a costly commute or significantly more unpaid work. Conversely, a lower salary with short hours, remote work or generous paid leave can be financially stronger than it first appears.
Supported automatic tax estimates
Before-tax employment-income estimates are currently available for the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. Other countries can still use the calculator by entering after-tax income.
