How to calculate your real hourly wage

A practical way to turn salary into an hourly figure that better reflects the time and money your job actually consumes.

1. Convert your pay to an annual amount

If you are salaried, use the annual salary. If you are paid hourly, estimate annual gross pay using your paid hours and working weeks.

2. Estimate what you keep after tax

Use after-tax pay if you already know it. If you use a tax estimate, be clear about what is and is not included. JobWorthCalculator supports automatic employment-income estimates for the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

3. Subtract direct job costs

Include costs you personally pay because of the job, such as commuting and recurring work expenses. Avoid adding ordinary household spending that would exist regardless of the job.

4. Count the time the job actually consumes

Add paid working hours, unpaid overtime and commuting time. Paid leave reduces the number of weeks you actually work without reducing annual salary, so it matters to job value.

True hourly value = (after-tax annual income โˆ’ annual direct job costs) รท annual job-related hours

5. Use the result to compare alternatives

The result is most useful as a decision metric. Compare your current job with a new offer, a remote-work arrangement, reduced overtime or a shorter commute. A single number cannot capture every reason to take a job, but it can expose financial trade-offs that salary alone hides.

What this metric does not measure

It does not put a dollar value on career growth, job security, workplace culture, health, meaning, enjoyment or future promotion potential. Those can matter more than the calculated difference. Treat true hourly value as one decision input, not a complete verdict.
